Good to know about trademarks
A trademark is a distinguishing sign for a product or service. With a registration of your trademark you get the exclusive right to use it for selected products and services.
This is a trademark
It may, for example, consist of words, figures, letters, numbers, personal names, slogans, holograms or sounds. It can also be a specific formulation of the product itself or its packaging.
A trademark registration is valid for 10 years and you can renew the registration as many times as you want.
Examples of various trademarks
Why you should register a trademark:
- To prevent others from using or infringing on your registered trademark
- To obtain the sole right to use the trademark for the products and services you have registered
- To create a registered intellectual property right that can be independently transferred or licensed
- To monitor incoming goods and take action against counterfeit products at the border
- To increase the value of your company
Investigate which trademarks are already registered
Your trademark may not be at risk of being confused with other trademarks. Through the trademark databases, you can yourself investigate if the trademark is already registered under similar products and services that you intend to market. Before you apply for the trademark, it may also be good to ensure if you can get the domain name and company name you want.
